Protect students, teachers against COVID-19, gov’t, schools’ owners told

An education tech infrastructure company, Skool Media, has urged government at all levels and private schools owners to ensure the protection of Nigerian students and teachers against the spread of the ravaging coronavirus.

The firm, in a statement to commemorate the 2021 International Day of Education, with the theme ‘Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation’, said it has become germane for handlers of education to put in place necessary measures to protect students and teachers as they resume for academic activities in the country.

“It is the first step towards sustaining the lives of students as they strive to recover lost grounds,” it said.

The head of Corporate Communications of Skool Media, Mr. Sola Oluwadare, emphasised that while it is necessary for schools to open for educational activities since life must continue, it is also crucial for stakeholders to support a safe school environment.

“Though most African countries are not as hit as Europe and Asia by the pandemic, they still need to do so, so as not to risk the lives of the children and teachers.

“The education sector which serves as the anchor of future generations must be safeguarded in order to raise leaders that will usher Nigeria to its desired destination.

“As we all go through the second wave of the pandemic and readjust to the new normal, the handlers and leadership of our education sector in Nigeria and across Africa must take necessary steps towards protecting the students and teachers because of the high tendency to mingle, which is the potential ground for contracting and spreading the virus,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day of Education; appreciating teachers and school managers for their resilience and continuous innovations towards minimising learning loss and revitalising education for pupils in the state.

The first International Day of Education was observed on January 24, 2019, by the United Nations member states and other relevant bodies; and since then, has become a special annual event.

This year’s edition themed ‘Recover and Revitalise Education for the COVID-19 Generation’ was marked worldwide on Monday, January 25, 2021
