Proliferation of e-newspapers

Public vexation around the humongous rise of fake news is believed to be aided by the proliferation of political and regionally affiliated online newspapers in Nigeria’s cyberspace.

These publications have become purveyors and peddlers of misinformation, as well as the unprofessional and unethical practices of some “journalists”.

While the culprits are succeeding in achieving their nefarious aims, journalism is losing its priceless jewel of integrity and credibility.

Journalism is highly regarded in view of its commitment to truth and credibility. It was shown by early practitioners in Nigeria. However, with the advent of citizen journalism, all that has been thrown to the wind.

Now many of the practitioners do not have the requisite qualification to practice as journalists.

In addition to this, many media owners have further worsened the situation by employing non-professionals to work for them.

To remedy the situation, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Press Council, Online Newspaper Proprietors of Nigeria, and all other relevant bodies must wake up from their slumber to rescue the situation.

They should immediately establish and enforce requisite requirements for entry and practice in the profession.
