President Muhammadu Buhari recently appointed Professor Abba Tijjani as the Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
Professor Abba was born on the 5th of February 1963 in a town in Borno State, Abadam, Abadam Local Government.
Prof. Abba is happily married with children.
Prof. Abba has experience in the education sector and the humanities as an anthropologist and a museologist.
From 1987 to 1990, Abba completed a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts from the University of Maiduguri, where he carried out his project on Kanuri Brasses.
He specialized in Art History and Museology.
Prof. Abba obtained a Master’s degree from 1993 to 1994 from the University College London, United Kingdom where he studied Museum Studies.
He carried out his dissertation on “Computerization of Ethnographic Materials in the Linden Museum Stuttgart: A Case Study.”
In 2002-2005, Prof. Abba completed a Ph.D. in Anthropology from University of London, United Kingdom.
Prof. Abba attained the rank of a Professor of Museology and Anthropology in October 2017.
Until his appointment as the DG of the Commission, Prof. Abba has held different positions.
Prof. Abba was on October 2016 appointed the Ag. Director, Centre for the Study and Promotion of Cultural Sustainability, University of Maiduguri, Borno State.
He was also Executive Board of Director and Head (Nigeria) DAAD-Funded Project SDG Graduate School “Performing Sustainability: Cultures and Development in West Africa.”
He was also Deputy Director, Archive and Records Management Unit, University of Maiduguri.
He was Head of Department of Fine Arts, University of Maiduguri from August 2012 to October 2016
Until then, he held the position of a Coordinator, Joint Collaboration/MoU between University of Maiduguri and Universities of Hamburg and Hildesheim in Germany.
He was a Research Assistant, Joint Research Project between University of Frankfurt (Germany), and the University of Maiduguri (Nigeria).
He was also a Consultant in setting up of museums, exhibitions, and documentation.
He was a Gallery Administrator, Department of Creative Arts and was also Head of Kanuri Data Bank Project (University of Maiduguri Chapter).
Prof. Abba was a Sub-Coordinator, Borno Music Documentation Project (BMDP); Exams and Time-Table Officer, Department of Creative Arts, University of Maiduguri.
In 1996, he was awarded by Royal Anthropological Institute, Horniman Scholarships, London research grant for doctoral research.
From October 1993 to September 1994, he enjoyed the Foreign and Commonwealth Scholarship, administered by the British Council for MA Museum Studies, University College London.
The University of Frankfurt ‘African Award’ awarded him with five months research visits to University of Frankfurt, Germany from May to September 1993.
