Prof. Kurawa assumes duty as new VC of YUMSUK

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, has assumed duty with a promise to serve the institution diligently by uplifting its standards.

Kurawa was one of the eight professors earlier shortlisted for the position by the university.

In his inaugural speech on Wednesday, the new VC solicited for the support and cooperation of both academic and non academic staff of the university as well as the entire university community in order to succeed.

According to him, “My vision for this great citadel of learning is to launch a ‘Consolidation’ agenda that will focus and build further on the tremendous achievements recorded so far by the Management under the guidance of the Governing Council and at the same time, provide a ‘Paradigm Shift from Knowledge Production to Knowledge Production and Talent Incubation’ that will go in tandem with the mission and vision of the University.”

While expressing appreciation to the Kano State Government and Governing Council of the University, he pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him.

He promised to enhance internal revenue generation through innovative consultancy outfit and also to establish self-sustaining Postgraduate programmes through collaborations with relevant industries within and outside the country.

“My administration will aim at making the University a world class citadel of learning that provides practical education directed towards the training of highly knowledgeable, skilled and disciplined citizens, that would also serve as a platform for creating awareness and empowering youth in the host community,” he added.

Receiving the new Vice-Chancellor, the management of the university led by the outgoing acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Musa, assured their total support and cooperation to the new Vice-Chancellor in order to achieving the desired objective.

Prof. Kurawa was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the University on 16th October, 2020 by the Governing Council of the institution.

Until his appointment, Prof. Kurawa was the Rector of Kano State Polytechnic.

A Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Kurawa attended Bayero University, Kano between 1986 and 1991 where he bagged a Bachelor of Science Degree Honours in Chemistry and again he was at the same University from 1994 to 1999 for his read M.S.c. in Inorganic Chemistry.

He had his PhD from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom from 2005 to 2009.

In 1993, Prof. Kurawa joined the service of Bayero University, Kano as Graduate Assistant and rose through ranks to become a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in 2015, a position he has been holding till date.

He has many scholastic publications in local and international journals.

Prof. Kurawa served in various capacities.

He is a member of many professional associations.
