Pro-democracy activists demand probe into banditry sponsorship

The Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development (PAPSD) has voiced its support for the Defence Headquarters’ investigation into the sponsorship of banditry in Zamfara State and the wider North West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, the Executive Director of PAPSD, said in a statement that the government’s initiative was an overdue measure necessary for achieving sustainable peace, security and development in the region.

Shinkafi highlighted the alarming levels of violence, including killings, kidnappings for ransom, property destruction, and the imposition of levies by criminal elements, calling for concerted military efforts to combat the threats and restore national security.

“We align our position with the Defence Headquarters, the highest military command in Nigeria. Any person or group found wanting in the course of the probe should face the full weight of the law, regardless of their status or position,” he said.

The PAPSD also condemned the actions of some politicians who exploit banditry as a political tool against opponents for personal gain.

Shinkafi urged the Defence Headquarters to investigate those who politicise the security challenges, accusing public officials of diverting funds intended for security purposes for personal enrichment.

Shinkafi emphasised that the collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and security agencies has yielded positive results in the fight against banditry, contributing to national security, peace, stability and prosperity.
