The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities has called governments to give full autonomy to universities to allow them respond to their demands.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Committee’s two-day national conference with the theme, “Sustainable Tertiary Education in a Harsh Economic Environment.”
The committee recommended a total overhaul of the national education sector to rescue it from ‘further decay,’ adding that universities need serious revitalisation that would enable them serve as engines of both community development and social renewal through fundamental reforms in curriculum design, teaching and governance.
While seeking for sustainable funding for public universities, the pro-chancellors asked councils and university managers to exploit all alternatives and additional means of funding as well as ensure accountability.
The committee called on vice chancellors to ensure industrial peace.
