President’s invitation: Enforce our resolutions, Rep tells House leadership

The member representing Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep Solomon Bulus Maren (PDP, Plateau) has challenged the leadership of the lower chamber of National Assembly to enforce its resolution, which invited President Muhammadu Buhari.

Maren was reacting to a statement issued by the House spokesman, Rep Benjamin Kalu (APC, Abia) on Monday debunking a report that the House had apologised to the president over the invitation.

In an SMS to our reporter over the issue, the lawmaker said: “Laughable. There is no need issuing a statement. They should enforce the House resolutions. Our people are dying and survivors living in danger of being killed. Let’s stop the rhetorics and do the needful.”

The House spokesman in the said statement refuted the reports that it had apologised to the Presidency over its earlier invitation of President Buhari to appear before the House over security matters.

“The president or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of Representatives for carrying out its constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate.

“Where then did the media get the report that the House as an institution apologized to anyone? Media professionals are advised to uphold the ethics of their profession.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House never apologized to anyone for exercising its constitutional mandate and the 9th Assembly of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila will not do anything to desecrate or destroy the critical institution of democracy – the Legislature.

“We strongly believe that President Buhari subscribes to these democratic ethos and ideals as well,” he said.
