Presidential Poll: Remain calm, PDP urges Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged Nigerians to remain calm as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  the winner of Saturday’s presidential election.

Buhari was declared re-elected having polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 states, to defeat other 72 candidates including Atiku Abubakar, the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 11, 255,978 votes and won 17 states and the FCT, to occupied the second position.

The agent of the PDP  and a former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka who spoke after the final announcement, urged Nigerians to remain calm, stressing that the PDP believes in the constitution of Nigeria and committed to democracy.

“The PDP remains a very lawful party, we believe in the law, we believe in the constitution of Nigeria, we are committed to democracy. But we have a good message for Nigerians, we want them to remain peaceful, we will explore all our options, including the belief that the legal process in Nigeria is one of the way to resolve issues,” Chidoka said.

He had earlier urged the chairman of  INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu not to declare Buhari as the president-elect.

He argued that there are 5.1 million voters who could not vote as a result of cancelled votes, difference in voters registers among others. He said they cannot be ignored as it is higher than the  3.9 million votes that Buhari polled ahead of his main Challenger, Atiku.
