From Kehinde Akinyemi, Abeokuta

Following a downpour in Abeokuta yesterday, a dilapidated building collapsed and killed a pregnant woman and her daughter.

The incident occurred at Agbo ile Oni Onifufu/Aderupaba compound, in the Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, Abeokuta South local government area of Ogun state.

The deceased woman Kafayat Somoye who was reported to be five months pregnant, was about taking her children Ganiyat and Ganiyu Somoye to school early in the morning when the incident happened after a heavy downpour Wednesday night.

While Ganiyu narrowly escaped, both the mother and the five-year-old Ganiyat got trapped under the collapsed wall.

When our correspondent visited the scene, the two dead bodies were on the floor with the small girl dressed in her school uniform and holding a candy.

An eyewitness Kabirat Sonde said the deceased pregnant woman did not die immediately, explaining, “She was rescued alive and people started pouring water on her. She was being rushed to the hospital when she gave up. People didn’t know immediately that there was a girl trapped. It was late before the girl was found and she was already dead.”

Police officers from Oke Itoku and Ibara divisions were available to prevent breakdown of law as angry youths made attempts to burn down the remaining part of the old building.
