Five persons, including a pregnant woman, lost their lives in a road crash that occurred along the Enugu-Ugwogo-Opi road.

Daily Trust gathered that the crash, involving a tricycle, popularly called Keke and a water tanker, happened on Monday near the Elim Estate in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

A witness said the accident happened when the tricycle rider, after overtaking a trailer, came face-to-face with a water tanker coming from the opposite direction.

“The Keke driver did a wrong overtaking on this road. Just as he left his lane, a water tanker was coming from the other lane of the road and he could not get a space to avoid collision with the water tanker.

“From what I observed, he was trapped under the tanker and all of them in the Keke died,” the eyewitness said.

“As people, including the police from the nearby station, came to help bring out the victims from under the tanker, we found out that one of the passengers was heavily pregnant and she died with her baby,” he added.

He said the remains of the victims have been deposited at the morgue.

Confirming the incident, Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe said only two persons died from the crash while one person was responding to treatment.

Ndukwe said: “Investigation is ongoing into the case of a fatal motor accident that occurred on 01/09/2021 at 0930hrs, along Ibagwa-Nike Road, involving a tanker and tricycle, in which two persons (a male and female) who sustained degrees of injuries, were rushed to a nearby hospital and confirmed dead by Doctors on duty; while one other is responding to treatment.”
