The commission made this known at the one-day retreat on the imperatives for the conduct of the 2016 population and housing census with members of the National Assembly in Abuja.
Federal Commissioner representing Edo State at the commission, Dr Tunde Lakoju said “a situation where we are literally condemned to the whims of donor agencies as a country is not healthy at all.”
He said what the commission gets for critical activities that happen in-between censuses is appalling.
“There is what we call donor fatigue; these agencies have also expressed both covertly and overtly that we do not need aids as a country,” he said.
Lakoju also lamented the poor operating environment that has made it impossible for the commissioners to function.
Chairman of the commission, Eze Duruiheoma, called for the special intervention and support of the National Assembly for adequate budgetary allocation.
Vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Population and National Identity Cards, Abdulmumin N. Hassan pledged to convey what was discussed to the assembly and support to the commission to discharge its responsibility.
