The coordinator, National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr Nnenna Ezeigwe has said reluctance by many Nigerians to adopt scientifically proven strategies and intervention against malaria is seriously hampering the country’s progress on malaria control.
She stated this at the weekend in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen at the end of report on dissemination of the Support to National Malaria Programme (SuNMaP).
SuNMaP is a project of Malaria Consortium, a non-governmental organisation aimed at enhancing interventions for malaria elimination in Nigeria and funded by the United Kingdom government through Department for International Development (DFID).
The programme is currently being implemented in 10 states including Lagos, Ogun, Enugu, Niger, Jigawa, Yobe, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Anambra.
Ezeigwe called on Nigerians to always make sure they sleep under insecticide treated nets adding that the organisation has embarked on strategies at the grassroots to make communities understand the need to take interventions that have been proven can work.
Country Director of Malaria Consortium, Dr. Kolawole Maxwell said the organisation has developed 14 training modules for combating malaria in the country which would serve as a guideline for states as the programme ends.
