Poly innovation centre manufactures defeathering, juice extractor, castor oil machines

At the just concluded technology expo, schools have proven that they have what it takes to revolutionize the technology space and change activities in the country agricultural sector.

One of such schools is the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, which showcased a number of technologies such as the poultry defeathering machine, juice extractor and castor oil machine.

Mrs. Joy Festus, a technologist from the Federal Polytechnic Ede Innovation Centre showcased some machines from the centre, with three which are key to the agric sector. They include the electric poultry defeathering machine, which she said can process ten birds at a time.

“What it is majorly used for is to defeather various types of birds like chicken and turkey. After slaughtering the chicken, then dip it in hot water and put in the defeathering machine. The machine does all the defeathering within 10 second, the machine can hold at least 10 birds at a time.

“It is a locally made machine from our school; it is very durable and we have produced about 4 for people that asked of it. The cost of production as at last year when we started was about N60,000 but now if we want to sell it; it is going for a N100,000.”

Another machine that the centre showcased was the manual juice extractor, which can be used manually to extract juice from fruits while separating the juice from the shaft.

But interestingly, the centre has upgraded the castor oil machine. She said the school developed the machine because it has a castor farm and decided to come up with a machine, which is used to extract oil from the castor nut.

Currently, the school is working on a destoning machine for the rice industry but the question remains: will such innovations get the required push for adoption in the larger society? Experts said it is time for the country to look inward.
