Police trying to conceal postmortem report – Abugu’s family

The family of slain National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ifeoma Abugu has accused the Nigerian Police Force of concealing the result of the postmortem examination conducted on her remains.

In a statement signed by the family solicitor, Ifeanyi Mamah on Saturday, the family alleged that the information available to them indicate that the post-mortem, which came out on Monday, indicted the police over the death of the ex-corper.

“We wouldn’t argue with the police or force them to prosecute based on the outcome of investigations, after all it’s the case for the state, and the police has discretion to exercise,” Mamah said.

“Such discretion must be exercised according to law and we expect the police to do justice even if the heavens fall. We expect that the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Bala Ciroma and Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu will do justice in the circumstances.

“When we met the Commissioner of Police on last Thursday morning together with Senator Chukwuka Utazi (the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes), he promised to ensure the police prosecutes the suspects diligently. However, we don’t have confidence in police prosecutors and would prefer the Attorney General of the Federation or officers of his department to undertake the prosecution of the suspects,” Mamah added.

Abugu died in police custody, with her body allegedly violated, on September 10 after operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) invaded her fiancé’s residence in Lokongoma, FCT and arrested her in his absence.

The lawyer said the action contravened the provision of Section 7 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA, 2015) which expressly prohibited arrest of a person in lieu of a suspect.
