The Enugu State Police Command, has begun a statewide sensitisation on its ‘Bail is Free Campaign’ to residents of Enugu.

The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, while speaking at the town hall meeting of Enugu West Senatorial Zone in Awgu, near Enugu on Thursday, said that collecting money for bail was unprofessional.

Amaraizu, spoke on the topic; “Know Your Right; Bail is Free’’.

He said that the meeting was to inform and educate the public (stakeholders) on the professional standards expected of any police personnel.

“It is meant to let everybody know the professional conduct expected of any police personnel, as well as the expectations of policemen and officers from the public;

“What the public need to do and how they are to participate in community policing as well as relate well with their police,’’ he said.

According to him, the series of town hall meetings and other engagements are meant to carry the people along as the command implements full community policing strategies in the state.

Amaraizu said that similar town hall meetings had already been organised for people of Enugu East Senatorial Zone as well as Enugu North Senatorial Zone earlier this week.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stakeholders at the meeting were given relevant contact phone numbers of the Police Accountability Units (PAU).

NAN reports that the phone numbers were given to the people so as to report any unprofessional conduct of any police personnel within the zone to the appropriate authorities.

NAN also reports that the meeting was organised by the command in partnership with the Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP). (NAN)
