Police, residents foil robbery operation in Bayelsa, recover N10m

Police operatives and some residents of Amarata community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Monday foiled an armed robbery attempt, rescued the victim and recovered N10 million cash.

It was gathered that the armed robbers, who operated in a black SUV, trailed their victim from a commercial bank, Amarata branch, where he withdrew the cash. They shot severally at him along the Sani Abacha expressway, but he refused to stop.

A witness, Mary Fabi, told journalists that the armed robbers shot at the tyres of the victim’s vehicle, which forced it to skid off to the other side of the road and somersaulted severally before hitting a tricycle.

The accident caused traffic buildup on the busy road as sympathisers who immediately gathered at the scene overpowered the armed robbers, who escaped without the targeted cash.

When Daily Trust correspondent arrived at the scene, a police team and sympathisers were seen rescuing the commercial tricycle operator.

It was gathered that the police team at the commercial bank, who responded to a distress call, returned the recovered cash to the bank while the victims were taken to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

When contacted, police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, said he was yet to get the details of the incident.
