Police in Anambra State have arrested two suspects and confiscated a substantial amount of gunpowder reportedly concealed in bags of cassava flakes (garri), alongside a locally made pistol and live ammunition.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, said the suspects were arrested during a routine patrol in the Pillar-Pole area of Aguata on Sunday.
Ikenga confirmed that one suspect was intercepted carrying three bags of garri. Upon searching the bags, officers found gunpowder hidden underneath the edible product.
He said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was transporting the supplies to a criminal camp for use in manufacturing explosives.
He said in a separate operation, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) raided a hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, and arrested Nelson Wisdom, a male from Edo State.
Officers recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live rounds of ammunition, he added.
He said all the suspects would be charged in court following the conclusion of investigations.
