Police kill vigilante in Edo

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have killed a vigilante identified as Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi (27) over a disagreement with some woman.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Osemede Street, Ewa Road, Benin, on Friday evening after the vigilante cautioned a woman who was dumping refuse on the road desist from it as it was blocking the waterway.

The woman was said to have informed her husband who went to the vigilante’s house and engaged him in a war of words and left with a message that he was coming back. And he came back to the vigilante’s house in the evening with policemen and they again engaged in a war of words again and in the process the policemen shot him dead on the spot.

Sources said the youths of the area who were angered by the development took the corpse to the state police command in protest.

When contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Kotongs Bello, confirmed the incident, saying the police officers involved had been arrested in order to identify who actually shot the vigilante among them if actually they fired the shot.

“The husband and his wife have also been arrested and they are in police custody.”
