A soldier was yesterday shot dead by police officers, leading to pandemonium in the popular Ada Goerge axis of Port Harcourt yesterday when

Witness account had it that the soldier lodged at a hotel along Elipranwo part of Port Harcourt before the incident occurred.

The witness said the victim who was in mufti and armed with gun was on his way from the hotel when he was accosted by the police officers attached to Ada George police station.

“The policemen probably mistook him for a criminal and shot him to death,” a witness said.

The police barricaded the road to avoid a reprisal attack from soldiers which caused heavy traffic gridlock within the area.

The road was later reopened for motorist.

When contacted, Rivers State Police Command Public Relation Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP, confirmed the incident but declined further details.

The Assistant Director of Army Public Relations of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, said both the Army and the Police will issue a joint statement on the incident.
