The 2016 Intra Zonal Sports Championship of the zone 7 Police command has commenced in Kaduna with participants competing in 21 games.
The competition which is in preparation for the Nigeria Police Games/Inter Zonal Sports Championship coming up in Abuja, is also to enable Zone 7 Police command, comprising of Kaduna, Abuja and Niger, to select their best hands for the inter zonal championship.
The sporting events were for both men and women of the force and they included athletics, boxing, football, tug of war, judo, squash, shooting, taekwondo, tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Others are weight lifting, golf, basketball, hockey, handball, swimming, wrestling, chess, volleyball, and karate.
According to the rules and regulation of the championship contained in the programme, the international rules governing games and sports up to the 24th South Korea Olympic Games shall be applied generally. The rule further stated that, as it is all Police affair, no state command is allowed to field any civilian or an unregistered Police competitor for any game. Any contravening team shall be disqualified and whosoever is responsible for cheating shall be disciplined.
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, the Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Umar Shehu, said among the many significance of the championship is to bring the police personnel together in friendship, unison and unity.
