Police inspector, 2 others shot dead in Delta bank robbery

A police Inspector and two others were shot dead on Tuesday when dare devil armed robbers raided Issele-Uku branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Delta State.

The robbers attacked the bank with bullets and dynamites before launching another assault on a police station in the community.

They drove away in two vehicles with an undisclosed sum of money.

A member of the gang of robbers was said to have been killed during the shootout with policemen.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Police Command, DSP Edafe Bright, who confirmed the incident, said the gang’s operational vehicle and one AK47 rifle were recovered by the police team.

Bright said the incident took place at about 4pm on Tuesday.

He said dynamites were used by the hoodlums to destroy the security doors of the banking hall, after which they made away with undisclosed amount of money.

“The Police Station was simultaneously attacked and riddled with bullets. The Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Ari Muhammed Ali quickly mobilized patrol teams from the State Police Headquarters Asaba to Issele-Uku, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operations, Olaleye Faleye, and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.

“The hoodlums escaped in two vehicles but were chased and consequently, they abandoned their vehicles and escaped into the bush. However, an Inspector of Police, Anioma Security Watch vigilante member and a civilian died while one of the hoodlums was killed and their vehicles recovered. Also recovered is one AK47 rifle breech No. 9558 with empty magazine painted with Police colour.

“The command is appealing to members of the public with useful information that will aid the arrest of these hoodlums to please avail such information to the commissioner of police,” he added.
