Police hunts “Yan Sakai” for shooting cop, soldier

Katsina state police commissioner Sanusi Buba has directed for the arrest of all members of the outlawed group “Yan sakai” who shot a policeman and a soldier with dane guns in Dandume, Katsina state.

The Yan sakai, a voluntary civilian task force, according to police at about 14:00hrs on Saturday riding on motorcycles invaded and attacked residents of Rugar Kinda, a Fulani settlement, in Dandume LGA of Katsina state and set some houses ablaze.

Those attacked by the hoodlums were mainly young children, all male, between the ages of eight to 14 years.

The statement signed by the command public relation officer SP Gambo Isah said the intervention of a combine team of Police, Nigerian Army and Vigilante group responded to the scene and rescued 26 of them to Dandume Police Division.

“The outlawed Yansakai group went on rampage and attacked Dandume Police Division demanding that, the children rescued be handed over to them for mob justice.  The team resisted the hoodlums as a result of which a Policeman and a soldier sustained gunshots injury fired from the dane guns of the Yansakai outlawed group” he said

“The Command wishes to categorically warn that it will not fold it arms and watch while some group of miscreants are taking the law into their hands.  The Command will deal decisively with any person or group of persons found parading themselves as “Yan sakai” or disguising in whatever name” he added.

He said, “Members of the general public are hereby encouraged to denounce the activities of Yan sakai as brutal, heinous, unconstitutional, unlawful and against the rule of law and laws of natural justice.”
