The deceased, according to the FCT Police Public Relations officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, who was last seen two days before her death, was found by her husband who was compelled to visit the office after several failed attempts to reach her on phone.
The FCT PPRO said it was discovered that she was killed in the office and dragged to the office bathroom where she was dumped. She added that at the time of her death, she was the only one in the office, which she shares with her husband.
“She was the only one in the office she was sharing with her husband. Her husband, who was in the United Kingdom came home and started calling his wife. When there was no response, he called his wife’s friend, who told him that she was not in her house; he then decided to visit their office at Usama Street in Maitama. At the office, he saw the butchered body of his wife in the bathroom,” the FCT PPRO said.
She also said the two security men in her office have been arrested and are undergoing interrogation, adding that forensic investigators visited the scene while the case has been transferred to CID.
Meanwhile, the PPRO dismissed claims that the police responded late to distress calls in the area, saying no such call was placed to the police aside when the deceased’s husband called.
A resident said the police only respond when the deeds have been done, claiming that on the day the lawyer was murdered, some residents called the Maitama police division to complain of incessant robberies in the area, and that they called the divisional police officer for hours but he didn’t respond.
“I have been robbed in Usama Street more than five times, even the night the lawyer was murdered, people were robbed at gun point. I personally called the divisional police officer severally and he did not respond to my calls until I came later to the office to make an official report. If the police do not respond to distress calls, how could the killers of that lawyer be caught?” he asked.
Another resident told City News that he has been attacked three times but that efforts to contact the Maitama police didn’t yield any fruits.
The source stated that if a woman could be brutally murdered in a street close to the police station, then residents are not safe.
But the FCT PPRO said no stone would be left unturned in getting the people behind the killing and as well secure the entire territory.
