The police in Abuja have arraigned a middle aged man for allegedly assaulting a man and refusing to make a written statement when he was arrested.
The suspect, Nweke Chukwudi, was said to have in company of “three other persons presently at large jointly in furtherance of a common intention to cause hurt or annoyance, caused criminal force, attacked, assaulted and battered Musibau Lamidi.”
The police First Information Report said Chukwudi attempted to force Lamidi into a black jeep which he was driving and also threatened to kill the victim and “by so doing put him in a state of fear of death or bodily injury.”
The police said when Chukwudi was arrested and taken to Kubwa Police station, he “intentionally refused to answer questions and to write statement in respect of these allegations” and thereby committed the offence of joint act, criminal force, assault, intimidation and refusing to answer public servant authorised to question contrary to sections 79, 265, 397 and 142 of the penal code law.
A source said Chukwudi attempted to kidnap Lamidi because police had wanted Lamidi to testify as a witness to an invasion of a property allegedly led by Chukwudi with armed thugs who shot sporadically into the air.
When the suspect was brought before a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, the judge, Muhammed Marafa, ordered that he be remanded at Suleja prisons.
