Police dispel rumour of Hausa, Igbo fighting in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has dispelled the rumour making the round that a man of Hausa extraction has killed an Igbo man with a cutlass over an argument at Mission road area of New Benin, Edo state.

Social media was agog with the rumour of an ethnic fight between Hausas and the Igbos, claiming that it all began after a Hausa man killed an Igbo man with a cutlass over an argument leading to the death of later.

Speaking to journalists, the Command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, said the identity of the assailant as regarding his name, address, tribe and family inclination is yet unknown”.

He said, “A young man whose name and address are unknown but profiled to be a mad man used cutlass to inflict bodily injuries on one Mr Anthony Jibunor of No. 116 Mission Road, Benin.”

He said following a distress call, a team of policemen were dispatched to the scene who met the victim with a matchet cut and the assailant already in the hands of an angry mob who were already beating him.

“The good news so far is that no one died, both the victim and the assailant are in good stable medical condition,” he said.

According to him, CP Abutu Yaro has appealed to the victim’s family members, sympathizers and the general public to remain calm and avoid any act capable of causing a breach of public peace.

He assured that the command will stop at nothing in arresting and prosecuting any offender and warned those encouraging jungle justice to desist from it and always bring the offender to the police for proper investigation.
