Police deploy 8,000 officers as Plateau holds LG polls today

The Plateau State Police Command has deployed over 8,000 personnel to ensure security during local government elections taking place today across the state’s 17 local government areas.

Eleven political parties are participating in the elections, including the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, announced the deployment on Tuesday at the command headquarters as officers were dispatched to their assigned local government areas. He assured the public that officers would arrive at their polling units on time to facilitate a smooth electoral process. “The police are committed to maintaining law and order, ensuring the safety of voters, and preventing any potential disruptions,” he stated.

DSP Alfred also issued a warning to individuals intending to cause unrest, reinforcing the police’s zero-tolerance policy towards electoral violence.

The police also announced a restriction of movement across the state from midnight on Tuesday to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing the Plateau South Senatorial District and leader of the APC in the state, expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the elections.

Upon arriving in his Southern Zone Senatorial District on Monday, he addressed voters in QuanPan Local Government, where he presented flags to APC Councillorship candidates.

Lalong urged constituents to vote for the APC, highlighting that the party has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the people and the delivery of democratic dividends. He contrasted this with the PDP, which he claimed has little to show after nearly two years in office.

Hon. John Dafaan, representing the QuanPan, Shendam, and Mikang Federal Constituency, echoed Lalong’s sentiments, assuring residents that the APC is not only prepared to win the elections but also committed to delivering good governance and infrastructure projects.
