Police confirm two dead in Onitsha building collapse

Anambra state Police Command has confirmed that two persons have died while one person was in the hospital receiving treatment after a building collapsed in Onitsha yesterday.

According to a statement issued by the state police spokesman, Harunna Muhammed, on Thursday, he said on Wednesday at about 3:00pm, a building under construction located at No 9 Ezenwa Street, Onitsha belonging to one Barr Ikebu Aso collapsed.

He said the police patrol teams and other sister agencies rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to checkmate miscreants and criminal elements from taking advantage of the situation to loot.

According to him, three casualties whose identities are yet to be ascertained were rescued alive from the collapsed building and rushed to the General Hospital in Onitsha by the Red Cross for medical attention.

He said out of the three, two were certified dead by the medical doctor and their corpses were deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

According to him, rescue operation is still ongoing and investigation is ongoing to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
