Twenty six commercial drivers have been arrested by police for various traffic related offences especially overloading and carrying passengers along with animals at Charanchi market.

Charanchi Sunday market is a weekly market that attracts visitors from across the country.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that in January, a stakeholders’ meeting was summoned by the Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba, with transporters over overloading and carrying humans with animals in the same vans.

The meeting was attended by leaders of the transport unions in the state, Commander Federal Road Safety Corps and Vehicle Inspection Officer.

It was unanimously agreed that the unions would, within a week, sensitize their members against overloading and carrying animals in trailers and other vehicles together with passengers and other violations of traffic regulations.

The spokesman of the state police command SP Gambo Isah, said after the expiration of the one week grace it became imperative for the command to embark on the arrests to serve as warning to erring motorists.

He said, the command would not compromise on its mandate of protecting life and property of citizens of the state and fold its arms while innocent people perish in ghastly motor vehicle accidents.

He said, the suspects would  be charged to court soon while the exercise would  continue until there was total compliance with traffic laws and regulations in the state.
