The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alkali Usman, yesterday said some suspects had been arrested over the killing of a former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Sunday Yusuf and the Acting Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Mrs Olufunke Omotuyi.
The commissioner however said at a news conference in Abuja that both cases were still under investigation but that the police had not been able to satisfactorily link the suspects to the crimes.
Yusuf was killed on the night of Monday, June 13, 2016. The killers threw him through the window of his flat on the third floor of an apartment at the Diplomatic Quarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
The Acting Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) was stabbed to death early Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at her Apo Area residence in the FCT.
“There are instances where we have some people taken into custody to assist in investigation process, for all the crimes you have mentioned,” he said.
Usman said the command had developed an operation order that would effectively cover security arrangements at all Eid praying grounds to prevent any security breach during the Eid-el-fitr celebration.
He said the arrangement also covers recreational centers which will be a beehive of activities, noting that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers had been properly briefed on their respective roles during the celebration.
He advised Muslims to avoid carrying bags to praying grounds, adding that this is not to inconvenience worshippers but a precautionary measure against security breaches.
The commissioner said the FCT Command arrested 23 suspects over armed robbery and car snatching offences around the FCT and its environs.
