Police begin trail of 4 policemen accused of extorting corps members

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced the trial of four policemen alleged to have extorted the sum of N1 million from three members of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) in the Surulere area of the state at the weekend.

The policemen serving in Surulere Police Station were alleged to have threatened to abduct the three corps members and that they would be killed if they failed to provide the said sum.

For fear of losing their lives, the victims were said to have transferred N1 million to the officers, who also threatened them with their rifles.

The corps members had taken to their X handle to share their experience after they were allowed to go

The message read this: “Your officers today in Surulere extorted N1 million from three corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House Area C Police Command of the @LagosPoliceNG where they were robbed. Their offence was the absence of a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil.”

In a swift reaction, the Lagos State Police Command, ordered for the arrest of the officers involved.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his X handle at the weekend, said the men have been summoned and their trial has commenced.

“We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial,” he added.

Hundeyin while giving an update on his X handle on Monday said the corps members were at the command’s headquarters on Monday to give their testimonies and present more evidence.

“The trial is progressing well. Further updates will follow in due course,” he stated.
