The Edo Police State Command has commenced an investigation of its officer allegedly involved in a kidnapping incident in Uromi, Esan North East LGA.

It was gathered that vigilantes and hunters in the area engaged a kidnapping gang in a shootout while they were attempting to kidnap a driver and his passengers and in the process killed one and arrested one other while other suspects escaped.

It was further gathered that the arrested kidnapper mentioned a police officer from Uromi Division and some locals as his accomplices, and that following the mention of some indigenes, the youths of the area took to the streets and called for the arrest of those implicated.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Funsho Adegboye, confirmed that the command was aware of the protest and that the officer implicated was under investigation.

He said, “We got wind of the officer that has been mentioned by an arrested kidnapper. As I am talking to you, some youths are on the street protesting the involvement of indigenes. May be a traditional ruler or whatever in cases of kidnapping in the area.

“We are not taking it with a pinch of salt. The case is under discreet investigation and whoever that is involved, we have been given a blanket order by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, that no matter who is involved, he should be dealt with according to the law of the land.”
