Police arrest phone-snatching gangs in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested members of a syndicate that were snatching phones in tricycles in the state between December 23 and 25, 2021.

Spokesman of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said in a statement that the arrest followed the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Alkali Baba Usman, to Operation Puff Adder to ensure round the clock visibility patrols during this festive period.

 “On December 23, 2021, reports were received from eight people of different addresses that on the same date at different times, they boarded tricycles and the occupants conspired and stole their mobile phones.

“On receipt of the reports, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, raised and instructed the team of Operation Puff Adder to recover the mobile phones and arrest the culprits.

 “The team swung into action and sustained follow-up and credible intelligence led to the arrest of one Abubakar Abdullahi, 20, of Maiduguri, Borno State and Abubakar Muhammed, 20, of Mubi, Adamawa State. 

“The suspects were arrested in possession of a tricycle and eight mobile phones. 

“During preliminary investigation, suspects confessed to using the tricycle, under the guise of carrying passengers to steal their mobile phones,” he said 

He added that on December 24, 2021, the team intercepted a tricycle with Reg. No. KANO FGG 216 QW and KAROTA Number DAL 19/1124 with two occupants, Sa’adu Jafar and Nafi’u Bala, all of Kurna Asabe Quarters Kano and that it recovered five mobile phones from them.

 “On investigation, the suspects confessed that they stole three mobile phones from people boarded their tricycle,” Kiyawa added.

The command also said on December 25, 2021 the team, while on surveillance patrol at Zango Quarters, Kano, arrested one Isma’il Jamilu, 18, in possession of four mobile phones and on preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to specialising in the theft of mobile phones and that, he stole them from different individuals at different places.

According to Kiyawa all the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
