Police arrest eight for kidnap, robbery in Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has arrested eight suspects over alleged kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, culpable homicide and impersonation among others.

Parading the suspects before newsmen on Tuesday in Gombe, the state’s Police Commissioner, Mr Ishola Babaita, said the suspects were arrested by operatives of the various divisions of the command.

He said on February 28, the police arrested one Ibrahim Saidu alias Shetti, 25, of Akkoyel in Kumo town of Akko LGA who allegedly stabbed one Saleh Babayo of the same town to death, after the deceased mistakenly knocked down the suspect’s dog with his motorcycle.

Also, one Isah Ya’u, 34 of Gona Dagre village of Bauchi State, Adamu Musa, 37, of Nalulta village in Bauchi State; Adamu Alhaji Lawal, 26, of Bakaini village in Shani LGA of Borno State and Ali Sani, 27, of Refele village in Balanga LGA of Gombe State were arrested over alleged conspiracy and kidnapping.

Babaita said on February 28 that a team of Police Mobile Force personnel based in Pindiga village of Akko LGA arrested four suspected notorious kidnappers who operated in Gobirawa forest.

According to him, the investigation revealed that the suspects are responsible for terrorising and kidnappings in southern Gombe state, Bauchi and Taraba states.

He added that they have also confessed to kidnapping one ‘Yellow’ from Taraba State, who was released after paying the sum of N500,000.

The police said all the suspects had confessed to their crimes. The police would arraign thebefore a court when the ongoing investigation is concluded.

Similarly, CP Babaita said the command has also arrested one Vincent Edesine, 36 of Ekpoma LGA of Edo state, who was working as a medical doctor at a private hospital in Gombe metropolis.

He said luck ran out on the suspect when the proprietor of the hospital discovered that he was using a fake certificate.

The commissioner of police also stated that the command on February 26 based on credible information, the Gona Division arrested one Adamu Umaru, 28, of Garbabi village of Taraba State, “who specialised in recruiting youth into kidnapping business.”

The suspect was said to have confessed to being responsible for various kidnappings and recruitments of youths into the business.

Meanwhile, police operatives from Tumfure Division arrested one Suleiman Ibrahim, 21, of Tumfure quarters for allegedly trailing and trespassing into the house of a 21-year-old victim (name withheld), and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

Mr Babaita said the victim was treated at the Specialists Hospital, Gombe, and the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.
