Police arrest 5 officers over taxi driver’s death in Edo

The police in Edo State have arrested five officers alleged to have caused the death of a commercial driver which sparked protests across Benin, the state capital.

Daily Trust gathered that one David Okojie was allegedly pushed onto the path of an oncoming truck by the police team that mounted a checkpoint by 3rd junction along Murtala Muhammed Way on Tuesday after he allegedly refused to give N100 demanded by the police.

Okojie was said to have been crushed to death by the oncoming truck.

Following the incident, youths and drivers embarked on a protest and burnt down five Hilux vans belonging to the police.

The Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo who disclosed this in a statement, said the officers are currently being investigated and would be made to face the full wrath of law if found culpable.

Kokumo assured that the command will not renege in its fight against all forms of human right abuses.

He advised parents, guardians and community leaders to prevail on their children and subjects against taking the law into their hands but allow police investigation to be concluded.
