The Kano state police command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Kabiru Mahmud, with 49 parcels of Indian hemp alleged to belong to his father.
Mahmud was arrested at Danbare while taking the substance from his family home at Gadonkaya quarters to a hiding place upon hearing of his father’s arrest.

The suspect said the Indian hemp belonged to his father and decided to take it to a hiding place when his mother, who was also arrested, told him that his father had been arrested.
The police spokesperson in Kano, Haruna Abdullahi Kiyawa said the command had received an intelligence report on a young man with some sacks believed to be Indian hemp.
“Immediately after, the Commissioner of Police Habu A. Sani mobilized operation Puff Adder under O/C Anti Daba Bashir Muhammad Gwadabe to arrest the suspect,” Kiyawa said.
According to him, police have also arrested Mahmud’s uncle and his mother who directed the suspect to move the substance from her matrimonial home at Gadonkaya quarters to Danbare.
The suspect told police that his mother called and informed him that police have arrested his father with Indian hemp, and he should come back and get rid of some exhibits kept in the home in anticipation of police arrival for investigation.
Mahmud, who admitted he was taking the Indian hemp to his friend at Danbare, told police that his father had been in the Indian hemp business for about 20 years.
“I called my friend at Danbare that I will bring the substance to his residence. My uncle called a tricycle rider and we uploaded the substance and moved it to Danbare. Upon our arrival, the operatives of Anti-Daba arrested all of us,” he told police.
Kiyawa added that the Commissioner of Police has directed the case to be transferred to the state CID for further investigation, and find out the source of the substance and how it was smuggled to Kano.
