Police arrest 4 bandits, rescue 9 kidnapped victims in Niger

The police in Niger State have arrested four bandits and their informants in a series of operations across the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, who made this known at a press conference at the police headquarters in Minna yesterday, added that a total of 19 suspects were arrested and three locally fabricated AK-47 rifles with magazines were recovered.

He said the sum of five million, one hundred-, and twenty-thousand-naira, three ATM cards, three national identity cards, one driver’s licence, two other I.D cards, four handsets, and two Toyota Corolla vehicles with Reg. No KTU 906 HM and ABJ 492 LA were recovered from one of the suspects.

The commissioner said among the suspects was a 37-year-old suspect, Umar Aliyu, aka Babuga Datijo, of Kwali, FCT, who was nabbed with a Toyota Corolla vehicle with Reg. No. KTU-906-HM along Salka-Raba village, Magama LGA.

He further said the suspect worked with other members of his gang had carried out several kidnapping activities in Shagamu expressway Ogun State, Tambuwal, Sokoto State, Alieru, Kebbi State and Niger State, adding that his share of the money from a ransom collected from the kidnapping of a victim in Nasko was recovered.

“The suspect confessed that he belonged to one Poyi’s group of bandits after the death of his members at Shagamu, while he mentioned other members of the gang as Maidabo and Shaibu Haruna, aka Felalu, ‘m’ of Garatu and equally provided their phone numbers to the police.”

The police commissioner said following his arrest, the gang members attempted to attack Nasko Division on 27/11/2023 at about 0030hrs, believing that the suspect was detained in the division, and they could free him. He added that the arrested suspect had been moved to the state police headquarters in Minna.
