Inspector-general of police has ordered “thorough investigation” into how Senator Dino Melaye escaped police taking him to be arraigned in court before he was re-arrested.
Police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood issued a statement saying Melaye escaped when “hoodlums and miscreants” in two SUVs blocked the police vehicle conveying Melaye at Area One roundabout in Abuja at about 12 noon.
Melaye jumped out the window and was rescued from the police by the “ hoodlums and miscreants to an unknown destination”, the statement said.
Moshood said the police team reinforced and trailed Melaye to Zankli Hospital to re-arrest him.
Melaye is to be arraigned “without further delay,” Moshood said.
"Meanwhile, one of the Toyota Hilux vehicles used by the hoodlums and miscreants in aiding the escape of the Senator has been recovered by the Police investigation team,” he added.
