Poet of the Week: Muhammad Kaigama Kazir

Chibok 269

Star spangled night

In the incandescent sky on this night so sore

SPONSOR AD

Not akin to the star-spangled banner

Not to the ideals

In one night after the school exams

Hanging air of trepidations

The vehicles came to move the peace afar

With gory evil reeking men

Like Charon to deliver in his boat

Into the labyrinth of Sambisa

In your night gowns, in your monthly flows

You left your beds untouched, the taps running

Your dinner uneaten, your exams unfinished

Chibok girls

In us you have travelled the world

From Canada to china

Even if you are confined

In the deepest part of this summits

Of the ancient basin of dead ocean of Chad

To wear malnourished hairs, hung on emaciated bodies

Adorning creaking bones resultant of lack of calcium

We heard you were dressed in clothes fanciful to them

Married off with not a choice

No guardian or guardian to give your hand

Like slaves in a roman auction

Yours can never be as the rape of Lucrese

Chibok girls

Brave and we know

Resolute in minds uncertain

In this cage of honour

You shall be back in dignity

Awaited by garlands and our own purple hearts

You will complete your examinations

Lay on beds you made

Eat your dinner you left behind

Get your inoculums

Make us smile as you dance the moon light dance

Because the book is not finished yet

It is the last chapter left

This chapter
