Poet of the Week: Maryam Saeed Ibraheem

Perfection

Like a full moon; her sight is perfection.
Like the stars; she guides my direction.
Like a dart; her tongue is not to dare.
Like thunder; she instills fear.
Her palms leave marks of discipline and affection.
The uniqueness in her voice reminds me of my purpose.
In the dark, her warmth is my comfort.
In the sun, her shadow remains my convoy.
She is my mother… why shall I disrespect?

Revenge is my only sustenance…
It makes me blind with rage.
Hate hides my righteous face….
It’s nothing but a sickening cage!
With curtains that hinder,
And chains that shackle…
I find my opinions linger,
In the incinerator with smoke that wreaks opprobrium.
“Be rid of all that bitterness, embrace only euphoria.”
“Be rid of all that tortures, let out your inner aura.”
“Be free from all that stains your heart…you are way bigger….”
“There’s no need to hang on to the past, there’s no room for that!”
But the thought never leaves me…
It’s buried deep within.
It’s mapped all over my body…
Even underneath my skin.
I remember how….
Detonations escalate as I’m compelled to leave the automobile.
I find myself prostrating to the devil in his domicile
Violations and torture become my everyday meal.
Until my “on the breadline” parents hustle and yet; kneel.
Dear shanghaier…
Is your conscience six-feet-deep?
Or are you also shackled?
But why take it out on me?
