PLwD, others get free mobile phones as NCC sensitises Kano residents

At least 10 Kano residents, including a Person Living with Disability (PLwD) have become owners of new mobile phones as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) sensitises residents on measures put in place to protect telecoms consumers against unsolicited text messages.

The winners of the new mobile phones emerged during a raffle draw conducted on Friday during the NCC Day at the Kano International Trade Fair.

Speaking earlier during the event, the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, said among measures put in place to protect telecoms consumers on the issue of telemarketing (unsolicited text messages) was the evolvement of a solution called ‘Do-Not-Disturb (DND).

Explaining how this works, Prof Danbatta, who was represented by the  Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, said the commission directed all network operators to dedicate a short code 2442 to enable subscribers to take informed but independent decisions on what messages they wish to receive from their networks by “Sending STOP to 2442 to stop the messages completely or Sending HELP to 2442 to choose your preferred message”.
