Commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Mr Nuhu Gagara who stated this while speaking with Sunday Trust in Jos, said “it’s not proper for something that is traditional to be taken to a conventional court. We are not happy with the number of litigations concerning the traditional institutions in the state; some of the cases affect the emirs of first class status.
“It’s not good because by going to court it means you are exposing your tradition in bad light, we are not happy”
Gagara said the state government was the loser in areas were there are chieftaincy disputes, especially as it affects the maintenance of peace, adding that as custodians of the customs and traditions of their people, traditional rulers help government in ensuring peace in their domains.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to resolve the pending court cases amicably, saying “through our efforts some cases were determined by the courts; some were withdrawn but there are many cases remaining in the courts.
We are now discussing with the local government chairmen on how we can bring the contending parties in every domain to dialogue with a view to resolving their differences amicably before the end of the year.”
He said the state government is to create new villages, districts areas and chiefdoms. “We have given them the guidelines and all communities are working round the clock to present their demands before the committee and we will create them in a way and manner that every body will be happy,” he said.
