Please reverse the school fees hike in IBB University

It is a fact that the full realisation of the quality education can be hampered by a lack of resources, particularly for states with fewer resources. However, no matter how limited resources are, all states have an obligation to take appropriate steps towards the full realisation of quality education. A lack of resources cannot justify inaction. The  state government must demonstrate that it is making every effort to improve the standard of education, even when resources are scarce, but certainly not by exploiting the students.

The recent increase in the school fees by the management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Niger State, is uncalled for, inhumane and ill-timed. This is in consideration of the economic realities in the state. Affected parents are faced with the current economic hardship and the high cost of living in our society and are now burdened with ill-timed school fees increase.  The increased sum represents a huge amount for these vulnerable, highly tasked citizens.

The right to education is legally guaranteed for all without any hindrances. The government, specifically, Niger State, has the obligation to protect, respect, and fulfill this right.

The state government must be seen to be introducing policies and programmes that will alleviate the suffering of its citizens and not add to it.

I therefore, call on all well-meaning Nigerlites, stakeholders, civil society organisations, particularly the students’ associations and ASUU, to stand with the students, and lend their voices against this inhumane increment.
