Anguwan Doki was one of the risk-prone areas in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State for many years.
Before now, accessing some locations in the community used to be risky as residents were polarised along ethnic and religious lines.
However, Ali Yakubu, a youth leader in the area popularly known as peace ambassador, engendered peaceful coexistence among the diverse members of the community.
Yakubu told our correspondent in Jos that it was a tough task trying to reconcile the Muslim and Christian communities in the area.
He said, “It was never an easy task, but gradually God made it happen. I looked at the community and decided that things must not continue like that. We must change how we relate with one another.”
He recounted how he committed himself to visit jungles which remained the only avenue that brought Muslim and Christian youths in the community together.
He explained that, “I tried to deeply immerse myself in all their activities and later I organised a football competition between Muslims and Christians. That has helped immeasurably in restoring harmonious coexistence among Anguwan Doki residents.”
He further said aside football, he also organised dialogue for the parties to discuss their problems and proffer solutions, noting that the strategies employed had gone a long way in bringing the people together and restoring peace to the community.
