Fourteen women groups in Plateau State have received the sum of N285 million to cater for children and other vulnerable groups and persons in the state.
The donation was made Monday by the Country Director of the SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, Mr Eghosa Erhumwunse.
The beneficiaries of the donation are groups of artisanal women under the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) that have graduated from various skills acquisition programmes.
While the Child Rights Protection Network (CRPN), which is one of the beneficiaries, got N25 million to support its humanitarian activities, the other 13 VSLA groups got N20 million each to support them in setting up their members.
Speaking while presenting the cheques to the representatives of the recipients, Erhumwunse said the gesture will impact over 1,450 children and the overall improvement in community welfare.
He noted that he was making the donation in recognition of the dedication and accountability of those involved in caring for children.
He said in 2022, seven groups graduated, and a significant financial grant of $17.5 million was announced for them, and that there has been a significant growth and performance of these groups and their impact on society.
Erhumwunse acknowledged the economic challenges faced by families, which affect their ability to support their children and maintain their businesses, and so the grant is to support them for self-sufficiency and economic stability.
