Plateau to intensify operations against indiscriminate refuse dumps

The Plateau State government has restated its commitment to keep the state clean, environmentally friendly and healthy, as it intensifies efforts against indiscriminate refuse dumping across the state capital as well as other remote communities.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Abdullahi Abbas, stated this at the weekend during the monitoring and evaluation of the private waste disposers working in Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

He said the state government privatized waste evacuation in the state about five months ago, but discovered that the Jos-Bukuru metropolis was still very dirty which, he said, made it necessary for the relevant authorities to “go out and access the performances of the private waste operators.”

Abbas said from the assessment, out of the 14 zones visited, only about half of the private waste operators had performed well, while the remaining left much to be desired.

Reacting to the challenges of sensitization faced by some of the operators, the commissioner said they have done their best, including holding interactive sessions with many organizations, NGO’s and sponsored talk shows on radio stations.
