Plateau gunrunning kingpin nabbed with RPG

In the last few months, Operation Safe Haven, the multi-security task force charged with maintaining peace in Plateau and parts of Bauchi states has intensified its war on gunrunners and other arms dealers with the aim of ridding Plateau State of  illegally acquired arms.
Daily Trust reports that with relative peace now enjoyed by most of Plateau State’s communities, the task force has said that it was in the consolidation stage of its operation which include cordon and search to ensure that all illegally acquired arms were recovered.
This year alone, OPSH has recovered hundreds of weapons, from the highly sophisticated such as the military styled Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher to various locally made guns.
Between May and June, OPSH arrested and paraded many gunrunners including one Robert Uche, Daniel Manchafa, Rwang Bitrus and Davou Chuwang who on their part were planning to assemble six AK47 rifles to sell at the cost of N400,000.
But one of the greatest achievements of the task force in the last few months was the arrest of a notorious gunrunning kingpin who had eluded security agents in the state for about three years.
Nanbong Sambo Maidoki alias NSK who was arrested in a hotel in Langtang North on June 18, was found in possession of a military styled Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube launcher, an RPG bomb and RPG bomb charger.
He was said to have evaded arrest by personnel of the OPSH in September 2013 when two AK 47 rifles were recovered in his abandoned vehicle.
Daily Trust gathered that the suspect had neatly concealed the weapons under the back seat of his Toyota Highlander jeep with registration number AJ174RSH.
Security agents also said he had thrown the keys of the jeep away when he noticed security men gaining on him, adding that after a futile effort in getting the keys, men of the OPSH had to break into the car.
OPSH Media and Information Officer, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, told journalists that the arrest of Nanbong would improve the general security on the Plateau and reduce the proliferation of light weapons and small arms, adding that “on the consequence, it will reduce the rate at which communities are razed down, women and children are killed and men are maimed. Imagine what these will do to any community that it is launched at.”
Though the OPSH spokesperson did not speak on whether the suspect would be handed over to the police, our correspondent gathered from sister security agencies in the state that a notorious kingpin like Nanbong would be handed over to the Department of Security Service (DSS) and be charged with terrorism.
