Plateau beat MFM 2-0 to put Rivers United in sight

Title chasing Plateau United yesterday defeated relegation threatened MFM of Lagos 2-0 at home in MatchDay 23 to keep table toppers Rivers United within touching distance.

Both goals were scored in the first 35 minutes of the match as the second stanza saw a determined MFM that refused to concede more goals.

CHAN Eagles striker Mohammed Zulkulfilu’s low header from Anthony Sunday’s pass went beyond goalkeeper Isaac Jerry for Plateau United’s first goal in the 23rd minute.

12 minutes later, former Nasarawa United player, Haggai Katoh doubled Plateau United’s lead.

MFM reacted by making double substitution which saw Muyiwa Balogun and Tunde Azeez taking the position of Micah Ojodomo and Oladayo Alabi.

Plateau United also did double sub in the 73rd minute as goalscorer Zulkulfilu and Akila Jesse made way for Nenrot Silas and Albert Hilary respectively.

Despite the changes, the second half was stalemated as none of the two sides found the back of the net.

Meanwhile, the victory has lifted second placed Plateau United to 48 points one less than the league leaders Rivers United who have a game in hand.

Rivers United on 49 points, therefore, have a chance to restore their four point lead against Plateau United, if they pick the maximum points in today’s MatchDay 23 fixture with Enyimba in Port-Harcourt.

The odds favour Rivers United who have shown impressive form in the current season unlike the former African champions who are having a difficult season and are in 9th position with 32 points.
