Secretary General of the association, Aliyu Mohammed Dados, who made the call in an interview noted that only six of its over 2,000 registered members are currently employed by the state government.
Mohammed, who stressed the need for government to set up a special agency or commission to cater for the physically challenged, added that 5 per cent affirmative action should be applied in the handling of physically challenged people in government’s employment programmes.
“The government should give us 5% affirmative action in employment, if the government is employing 1000 workers for example, 50 slots should be allocated to persons with disabilities”, he said, adding that the association has forwarded the names of 295 members to the government to be considered for employment in its ongoing recruitment exercise.
Mohammed, who commended the state government for including its members in the 2013 SURE-P implementation in the state, however appealed to government to do more by coming up with social welfare packages to assist the disabled, especially the aged.
