Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, was on Thursday seen without prison officials for the first time in six years.
In the last six years, Zakzaky has been guided by armed personnel.
But when he was sighted at the Kaduna airport on Thursday evening, he was in the company of some of his followers without gun-wielding officers.
The Sheik, who was discharged and acquitted by a Kaduna State high court on Wednesday, made his way to Abuja.
Zakzaky was arrested in 2915 following a clash between his followers and soldiers.
