Following the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000, the organised labour grounded academic and economic activities in Kaduna State.

The labour is demanding N494,000 in minimum wage.

Students at the Kaduna Polytechnic were forced out of their campuses and the gates locked in compliance with the nationwide indefinite strike.

Our correspondent reports that as early as 7 am, labour union officials stormed the Unguwan Rimi Campus of the school.

Some students, who spoke to our correspondent, condemned the action and asked labour to return to the negotiation table. They expressed concern that their academic calendar would be affected if the strike continued.

Daily Trust reports that labour leaders in the state also sealed the main gate of the National Ear Care Centre. They chased out the workers and also prevented patients from getting into the hospital.

At the state secretariat located on Independence Way in the state capital where about seven ministries occupy, workers were locked outside of the gate by the labour union leaders. The main gate leading to the secretariat was also shut.

Activities in banks and other financial institutions were also disrupted as the staff were not allowed to get into their offices by the labour union officials.

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has also shut down operations at the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO).

The Kaduna State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Abdullahi Danfulani said all affiliate unions totally complied with the strike and would not back down until the Federal Government does the needful.
